5 Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Driveway

Regardless of how beautiful your home is, a crumbling driveway can kill its curb appeal. To make your property look attractive and aesthetically pleasant overall, you’ve to ensure that your driveway is well-maintained. While driveways can last for many years, a time will come when they’ll have to be replaced.

Many driveway issues can be fixed by simple repair work, but when the damage is widespread, the best solution is to replace it altogether. You’ve to look for signs that will indicate that it’s time to replace your driveway.

Let’s have a look at some of these signs.

1. Cracks

Driveways develop cracks over time. De-icing salt, oil, gas, and other substances penetrate the surface of the driveway and cause severe damages, which you can see as cracks. Moreover, the water that seeps through the driveway surface freezes in the winter months and expands, worsening the cracks on the driveway. If the cracks are small, simple repair work will be able to fix them, but if the cracks are deep and broad, a complete driveway replacement needs to be undertaken.

2. Potholes

Cracks are unsightly, but potholes are worse. They not only look bad, but they can create problems for your car. The suspension system and tires get significantly impacted when your car goes over a pothole every day. Potholes are a result of the expansion and contraction of the ground beneath the driveway. As time passes, the driveway material weakens and crumbles away, forming a pothole.

Minor potholes can be repaired, but filling a pothole doesn’t solve the underlying problem. A driveway replacement becomes necessary to keep potholes from forming again. Newer materials used in the driveway today are much more reliable and durable than the materials that were used to build the existing driveways decades ago.

3. Drainage Issues

Water doesn’t affect a driveway that is in good condition. However, water can cause severe damage to an already-crumbling driveway. Drainage issues with the driveway can result in the pooling of water that damages the driveway further. As a result, more cracks and potholes form. If you observe water pools on your driveway, it is a sign that it’s high time to get a driveway replacement.

4. Wear and Tear of Top Seal

The driveway sealing coat has to be renewed every two to three years. It protects the driveway from damage due to environmental factors. If you don’t remember when was the last time you got a fresh sealing coat for your driveway, the driveway must have been significantly damaged by now, even if you can’t see the signs yet. If it has been quite a while since you got your driveway repaired and treated, it’s better to get a driveway replacement to avoid any cracks or potholes forming shortly.

5. Faded Driveway

The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause your driveway to fade and appear weathered. If your driveway has started to look old, dull, and worn-out, getting a driveway replacement is the right thing to do.

Summary

Driveway replacement gets necessary when there are excessive cracks and numerous potholes on the driveway that hurts the curb appeal of your home. If your driveway has started to show signs of damage,  hire a professional and get your driveway replaced right away!
